Simple Skies 1 - Transparent Graded wash
This demonstration shows a really simple way to
paint an effective, atmospheric sky. Permanent Rose and Cobalt Blue are both transparent non staining colors. Glazed over one another they produce
beautiful luminous washes
Tips
-
Intensity
Transparent non staining colors can be built up wash over wash over wash, so err on the side of weakness, you
can always go back and build up the intensity
-
Edges
Don't forget to vary the edges against the sky when you put your foreground in.
-
Slope
Tilting your work surface slightly will help you make nice even gradations.
Around 1:6 is steep enough.
-
Substitute Colors
Prussian or Windsor blue can be used if you don’t have Phthalo Blue. Indian Yellow can be used in place of
Quinacridone Gold. Rose Madder can replace Permanent Rose
